LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court in Lahore Sialkot Motorway rape case has sentenced the main accused Abid Malhi and Shafqat alias Baga to death. On Friday, the anti-terrorism court had reserved its verdict in the motorway abuse case, which was heard yesterday. Anti-terrorism court judge Arshad Hussain Bhatta delivered the verdict after a nearly six-month trial at Camp Jail Lahore. Both the accused have been sentenced to life imprisonment as well as a fine of Rs 50,000. A woman was raped on the motorway between the nights of September 9 and 10 last year. The woman was on her way to Gujranwala from Eastern Bypass with her children when two accused raped her on Lahore-Sialkot Motorway. When the car ran out of petrol, the woman parked the car on the side of the road. When the accused came, they first robbed the woman, then took the children hostage and raped her. The medical test proved that the woman had been abused. After the incident, Shafqat Baga was taken into custody from Depalpur while police arrested accused Abid Malhi from his close relative's house in Manga Mandi. Accused Shafqat Baga was arrested on September 14 while Malhi was arrested on October 12. Both were granted 25-day physical remand. During the interrogation, a pistol was recovered from accused Abid Malhi while a stick was recovered from accused Shafqat Baga. Inspector Zulfiqar Cheema completed the investigation of the accused and presented the challan in the court. The defendants had recorded a statement before the Kent Court Judicial Magistrate. The accused also made periodic denials in the anti-terrorism court. The jail trial in the motorway abuse case began on February 24. The accused were indicted on March 3, 2020 while the court completed the jail trial of the case in a short span of 17 days. Accused Abid Malhi and Shafqat Baga have been sentenced to death under 376/2. Both the accused have also been sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 365A. Section 392 carries a sentence of 14 years imprisonment. Sentenced to 5 years imprisonment under section 440. A fine of Rs 50,000 was imposed under Section 337F-1. 337 F2 was also fined 50,000. An order has also been issued under section 382B to confiscate all the property of the accused.
